Summer Release Planned for GroupWise 2012 Service Pack 1
Since we were on the Beta team for GroupWise 2012, Novell recently contacted us to invite us to be on the GroupWise 2012 SP1 beta team. The beta is scheduled to start within a few weeks. This was a little bit of a surprise, for a couple reasons:
- It's been almost 5 months since the initial release of GroupWise 2012, and there have been no hotpatches released.
- Novell previously established a release schedule for GroupWise 8 that included a major service pack followed by two or three patches before the next major support pack. During the final phases of the GroupWise 2012 beta, it sounded like the same pattern would apply for GroupWise 2012.
I will point out that GroupWise 2012 has been extremely stable for our customers that have upgraded, and Novell recently released a statement indicating that overall there were no major issues or other problems that required a major public fix to be released. This is very positive. So my initial speculation was that Novell felt like a hot-patch was not required and they'd move development straight into Service Pack 1.
As Beta team members, we are not allowed to disclose certain information. However, I did push Novell to let me disclose "some" limited info, so here is a summary of what I can publish: My initial hunch was correct. Novell determined that the quality of GroupWise 2012 was such that no immediate fixes are required for general public, and they decided to completely bypass the Hot Patch process. They are working furiously on Service Pack 1, and are scheduling a "Summer" release. SP1 will expand support for Tablets, and will include fixes for many reported defects, stability issues, and security alerts.
If You're Waiting for Service Pack 1
If your company always waits for Service Pack 1 before installing any new product, now may be a good time to start planning your upgrade. It should also ease your mind that our own personal experience has proven that GroupWise 2012 is much more stable than the original versions of both GroupWise 7 and GroupWise 8.
